Doctor Who Series 13 Starts Filming: 10 Early Predictions For What We'll See

8. More Emotional Struggles For Yaz

After basically being dead weight for the entirety of Series 11, Mandip Gill's Yaz finally got more of the spotlight in Series 12, particularly in the episode Can You Hear Me?

Here, we learned that a school bully - combined with some declining grades - badly affected her mental health, causing her to run away from home when she was younger. This brought a lot more depth to the character, revealing that she was much more fragile and sensitive than she seemed in Series 11, and looking ahead, all signs point to a further exploration of Yaz's troubles in Series 13.

For one thing, it's heavily rumoured that Yaz will be the sole companion in the next batch of episodes - which would obviously give the character a lot more screen time - but also, Gill herself has said that Yaz's emotional struggles will be part of her journey going forward, and that they will affect "her choices in the future".

We'll have to wait and see what she means by that, but it's a solid bet that Series 13 will take steps to flesh out Yaz even further.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
