Doctor Who Series 9 New Trailer: 12 Things We Learned
7. More About Maisie Williams
Maisie Williams' first appearance in a Who trailer was extremely mysterious, popping up right at the end to unmask herself and ask of the Doctor "what took you so long, old man?" It led to a huge amount of online theorising as to who she is playing - Susan! Jenny! Romana! River! - but Moffat has since revealed that she'll be a new character, not someone from the Doctor's past. There isn't quite so cryptic a tease about her this time around, and although we don't learn her name, we do see a bit more of what we can expect from her in the series. The first shot we get of her sees her and Clara in some old-timey peasant garb, in what could possibly be a viking village if they're appearing in the same episodes. Clara tells her: "He hasn't got a plan yet, but when he does, it'll be spectacular." This suggests that they're in a spot of bother and need saving, and also that Clara has 100% faith in Capaldi's Doctor. However, the next couple of times we see her she's looking far more noble and elegant - once with the aforementioned lion, and another looking rather panic stricken - which suggests that there's going to be a duality to her character's nature, which would certainly fit with her appearance in the first trailer, where the Doctor looks very surprised to see her (and once again, her attire is different). She's going to be doing a lot in her two episodes, unless of course Moffat was lying and she's in the series longer than he originally stated.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
