Doctor Who: Space Babies Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

Doctor Who Space Babies

Thanks to the Disney+ deal, Doctor Who can now reach more American viewers than ever before. Which is why it's a ballsy move for Russell T Davies to use the season opener to comment on the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.

This landmark decision led to a swathe of abortion bans and restrictions introduced in states across America, a regressive move that set back women's rights by decades.

In Space Babies, the Doctor and Ruby are given some backstory on the baby farms, courtesy of Jocelyn, the only adult who stayed on the space station. After first mandating the use of baby farms, the government on Pacifico Del Rio pulled the funding and refused to provide support for the babies after they were born.

It's a classic sci-fi allegory for how those states that ban abortion will also refuse to provide any sort of social care for the babies after they're born.

It's hardly subtle, but it needed saying, and makes you wonder what else RTD will be taking aim at during his new era.
