Doctor Who: The Bells of Saint John Review – 9 Points To Ponder

2. Does Free Will Exist?

bellsStJohn02

The end of €œThe Bells of Saint John€ reveals the Great Intelligence as the villain behind the harvesting of human minds. The Great Intelligence, a being without physical form, is building itself by assimilating others. In a way it is the ultimate control freak €“ a parasite that removes free will and manipulates other beings without their knowledge or consent. Free will is an interesting question in the Doctor Who universe €“ do the companions have it? Is it really possible for them to say no when the Doctor shows up on their doorstep? If the Doctor refuses to take on any more companions will the universe keep putting one in his way until he finally gives in? This certainly seemed to happen with Clara. What of the idea of destiny? Even if the Doctor rewrites certain events will they ultimately lead to the same place? How much control does he really have?
