Doctor Who's fifth series had a very big job to do. It was the beginning of a new era of the show, introducing both a new Doctor and a new companion all at once. In her debut episode, 'The Eleventh Hour', new companion Amy Pond is, effectively, introduced twice.

First seen as a child, Amelia Pond requests help from the newly-regenerated Eleventh Doctor after his Tardis crashes in her backyard, asking him to investigate a mysterious crack in her wall. After raiding Amelia's kitchen and taking a look at the crack, The Doctor departs for what is supposed to be a five-minute trip to rejig the Tardis.

Instead, he returns ten years later. Amelia, now going by Amy, is reintroduced as an adult, bitter at having been left behind by The Doctor, and forced into years of therapy over her refusal to give up believing in him. Thankfully, she does eventually get her chance to travel in the Tardis.

Amelia Pond, The Girl Who Waited, quickly earned her place in the hearts of Whovians, remaining a favourite even now, a decade after her first appearance
