Doctor Who: The Legend Of Ruby Sunday Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs

Some people (including the WhoCulture gang) predicted that the returning big bad of this series was in fact Sutekh, from Tom Baker's era. I was completely blind to this, so I'll admit, it came as a shocker.

There were various hints throughout the episode - the clue in Susan's company name (which for some reason Fifteen calls an anagram when it is no such thing), a rather sandy corpse, and the dreamy weamy projection that's somewhat of a staple in Sutekh's powerset.

There's also a cheeky little allusion to The Beast from Series 2's The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, both in the music and also out loud by Carla - The Beast shares a voice actor with Sutekh: Gabriel Woolf (who still puts in a crackingly menacing performance in this episode, aged 91). It's possible that these references are more than an allusion, and that The Beast is being retconned as the same being as Sutekh, as both are interpretations of the literal devil.

But I digress - this was a slap in the face cliffhanger that I found very reminiscent of 2006's Army of Ghosts. The prosthetics on Harbinger and Susan Triad were great, and whilst the execution of Sutekh's beastly form was a tad hokey, I loved the visual direction.

But, I also have to give this reveal a down.
