4. Speak A Truth
When River speaks the Doctors given name she openly acknowledges his true nature both light and dark and opens a door. As the Doctor tells Clara, your chosen name is the promise that you make. What defines you is not what others label you but what you call yourself. The Doctor chose to be a healer rather than a warrior. River becomes an archeologist rather than an assassin. Clara finally becomes soufflé girl she has mastered the recipe and come into her own. The John Hurt Doctor is given no name. He is not truly the Doctor, he has denied that name, broken that promise. Yet he is an incarnation of the same man. We do not know yet what he has chosen to be. Is he perhaps the one who destroyed his people in the time war? Has he been disowned by his other selves deliberately forgotten?
