Doctor Who: The Rings of Akhaten Review - 9 Themes To Think About

1. Is The Doctor A God?

If you are the most advanced and powerful being in the universe does that make you a god? Are gods born or made? What does being a god mean? The Doctor is hardly perfect. If he is a god he is more like the ones found in ancient Greek or Norse mythology. These were practical gods, not idealized ones. They experienced the same fallacies and emotions as humans but their lives played out on a much grander scale. The speech the Doctor gives when offering up his memories to the soul eating monster is one of the most effective parts of the episode. It is straight out of the €œlonely god€ playbook €“ an ancient being who is immensely powerful, perhaps unfathomable, who has no equal and as such is unable to truly connect with any one no matter how hard he tries to. He can€™t ever be known. The thing is though, that none of us can. We can never fully know the heart and mind of any of our loved ones. Our connection to them will never be absolute. We never get to spend forever with them. We only get to travel with them for a while.
