Doctor Who Theory: Why We Won't Meet The 14th Doctor Until The 60th Anniversary

3. Chris Chibnall Will Want To Go Out With A Bang...

Chris Chibnall's last Doctor Who episode as showrunner is currently slated as a BBC centenary special next year. There is absolutely no doubt the focus for him will be giving Whittaker a good send off while wrapping up his Timeless Child arc (a storyline which is an understatement to say has been divisive).

One thing which can be said for Chibnall though, regardless of how you feel about the Timeless Child, is that he has been very good at keeping surprises under his belt in the Whoniverse over the past couple of years.

His final episode is likely to be no different. What better way to exit, then, than to have a completely unique regeneration for Whittaker, something which has never been done before on the show?

So here's the theory: this writer believes Whittaker will actually regenerate into a previous incarnation of the Doctor.

While not going into too much speculative detail about how this could happen, this is something the Timeless Child arc could potentially fit into quite well. We now know the Doctor has an infinite number of regenerations. Depending on any discoveries or revelations she finds in the upcoming series, we could very well find her gaining the ability to revisit any of her previous incarnations, voluntarily or involuntarily.
