When it comes to companion arrivals, the Doctor usually impresses all potential travellers in some shape or form - that's just how he is. When it came to archaeology professor River Song, however, the Doctor was the one at a loss for words. She swept onto the scene fully in charge and waited for the Doctor to catch up with her. This was due to their backwards, timey-wimey relationship; the Doctor hadn't met River yet, but she had known him for years. Naturally, this does not sit well with the Doctor, who is not used to being one-upped. Tension abound as the Doctor demands answers that River refuses to provide, but they must work together if they want to escape the Library without being eaten by the Vashta Nerada. Silence In The Library was one of the most original companion introductions we have ever seen on Doctor Who. Although the idea of having a companion meet the Doctor out of order isn't completely original (Mel Bush appeared in The Trial of A Time Lord before her first meeting with the Doctor), there was an air of mystery around River that we wanted to penetrate as much as the Doctor did. She may not have been a full-time companion, but she always had us eagerly anticipating her next appearance.
