When the Doctor lands in 1966 London, he initially just took Dodo there for a visit. But nothing is ever just a visit for the Doctor, and it isn't long before he's caught up in the saga of WOTAN, a thinking machine that can answer any question - including the definition of TARDIS. Like most thinking machines, though, WOTAN decides it should be in charge of everything. WOTAN is a formidable opponent, managing to hypnotize Dodo into almost killing the Doctor. Fortunately, the Time Lord finds other allies in Polly, a secretary for one of the scientists who designed WOTAN, and Ben, a sailor whom Polly befriended at a club. They're an unorthodox team, but together they have what it takes to stop a crazed computer from destroying life as we know it. Ben and Polly's introductions rank so highly because there was a very natural, organic feel to them. They were already an established part of their respective worlds, and it made sense to include them because of their affiliations. Their time with the Doctor was a natural extension of the time they had spent on the screen already. It all felt completely natural and grew gracefully from interesting side characters to full-time companions.
