Doctor Who: What Happened To Every Companion?

6. Sylvester McCoy Era

If there's any classic Doctor that's close to as famous as Tom Baker, it would be the always cool, always clever, and always ready for action 7th Doctor, Sylvester McCoy. Like with Colin Baker, though he lasted much longer, he only had two companions.

The first was Melanie Bush, a computer programmer who joined up with the 6th Doctor, but only left during the 7th Doctor's era. Melanie's journey with The Doctor was a fascinating one in terms of her characterization. Unlike most companions, she chose to leave, but only so that she could be her own adventurer with her new friend Sabalom Glitz. But The Doctor wasn't alone for long, as Melanie was son replaced with Ace.

Ace is up there with Sarah Jane as one of the most popular classic Who companions. Mostly because unlike every other companion before and after, she didn't run away from trouble, she went looking for it, and was often the cause. This was a girl whose most famous scene is blowing up a Dalek with a rocket launcher!

Because of the show's abrupt conclusion, we would never learn exactly how she left The Doctor's service, though expanded lore material has recently been made canon that she had her memories wiped after several years of traveling with The Doctor. She would go on to start up her own worldwide charity - A Charitable Earth.

This would also be the last time we would see Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart on screen. We'll detail what ultimately happened to him when we get to 11.
