Doctor Who: William Hartnell’s 10 Best Episodes

6. The Chase

Doctor Who The Chase

Episode: Season , Episode 8

Companions: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki, Steven Taylor

After their first encounter on Skaro, and the Doctor foiling their plans in "the Dalek Invasion of Earth", The Daleks find the Doctor as their greatest foe and decide to EXTERMINATE him. The Daleks discover how to travel through the time vortex, enabling them to chase the Doctor and finish off their greatest foe. If you really just want to watch one episode to see how the William Hartnell years were, this would be the best episode to watch by far. This story goes through several locations, such as a haunted mansion, a ship, the Empire State building, as well as a movie set where they're filming a villain's plot to kill a damsel in distress using a sawmill. This grand story contains several other mini-stories adding to the experience, and is also the last episode we see from Barbara and Ian. With the Dalek's time machine containing a functional directional circuit, they talk to the Doctor about returning to their time, even though their time in the TARDIS would be the best years of their lives. The Doctor reluctantly lets them leave with his only words on the subject being, "I will miss them, yes I shall miss them," marking one of the first depressing scenes of Classic Who. There's worse, trust me on it.
