Doom Patrol Season 1 Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

2. It's A Charming Introduction To The Characters

Though the Doom Patrol was officially introduced in Titans, this is their real coming-out party, and whether you saw the Titans episode or not, it's a terrifically endearing welcome for the heroes (aside from Cyborg, who will show up soon).

Despite the undeniably formulaic structure of the season premiere - the first half of the episode is basically one expository backstory after another - the show doesn't feel in a rush to establish their bond or layer on the lazy, forced sentiment.

Instead, the character dynamics are rough around the edges but still charming in their scuzziness, and by focusing less on plot and more on the heroes, it feels decidedly less formulaic than similar recent superhero shows.
