Doom Patrol Season 1 Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

3. The Hilarious, Self-Aware Tone

Doom Patrol Alan Tudyk
Warner Bros.

There wasn't ever much worry that Doom Patrol would end up taking itself too seriously, but the very first moments of the episode make this abundantly clear, as Tudyk's Mr. Nobody complains about the over-abundance of superhero stories in the world and asks the audience, "Have you hung yourself yet?"

Though the majority of the episode doesn't stay quite this meta, there is still a tenor of self-awareness running through the first hour, appearing to appreciate the tropes associated with the Quirky Superhero Team and cleverly side-stepping a lot of them.

If it can maintain this level of playfulness while still doing right by its characters, then Doom Patrol could basically end up being what Suicide Squad wanted to be: DC's answer to the Guardians of the Galaxy.
