Emmys 2019: 10 Biggest Shocks And Snubs Of The Night

2. Game Of Thrones Wins Best Drama (But Barely Anything Else)

Game of Thrones was a weird one this year. Out of 14 nominations, the show only ended up taking two home, with Peter Dinklage winning yet again for Supporting Actor, and the show in general nabbing the gong for Outstanding Drama Series.

That's a contested one, though. Game of Thrones' final run divided fans and critics down the middle, with the general feeling being that the season's individual parts were better than the complete whole. There were great performances, flourishes of great writing and directing, and a sense of scale that's set the bar for event TV going forward, but all of that didn't amount to a cohesive, successful farewell.

While many expected it to sweep everything regardless - because after all this is the biggest show on TV's swan song we're talking about - the thinking was that the individual parts were still good enough to secure wins if all else failed, while it might lose out on the biggest prize as a consequence.

Instead, it won barely anything and then still took home Best Drama.

Again, taking Best Drama was perhaps inevitable, but to see it take a back seat in all but two categories was a total surprise.
