Emmys 2022: 5 Ups & 7 Downs

4. Barry, Better Call Saul, Severance & More Get Totally Shut Out

If safety was largely the theme of the night, then it was a total head-scratcher that some of the year's most acclaimed and beloved TV shows failed to secure even a single win from numerous nominations.

Bill Hader's Barry, which seemed like a lock for a Directing win, inexplicably lost out to Ted Lasso, while failing to score any wins at all from its seven nominations. Especially egregious was seeing Henry Winkler lose the Supporting Actor gong to Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein (no disrespect to Goldstein).

Elsewhere Better Call Saul's Emmy losing streak continues, with it now sitting at 46 nominations without a single win. However, it's fair to say that the show now has the perfect Cinderella story going into next year's Emmys - its final shot at securing gold for its key players.

Beyond this, superb shows like Severance, Yellowjackets, and Only Murders in the Building bizarrely went home empty-handed, cementing a ceremony that seemingly had little interest in spreading the wealth among nominees.

Charitably, you could say it's merely an indication of how much quality TV is being produced right now, but for so many all-timer shows to receive nothing is completely maddening.
