Emmys 2024 Review: 9 Ups & 7 Downs

2. Too Many Nostalgia Skits

This year's Emmys opened with a skit nodding to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, setting the tone for an evening which featured numerous reunions of casts from beloved TV shows, typically in recreations of sets from said show.

And while a few of them raised a smile - Martin, Ally McBeal, Cheers - the overall execution was wildly inconsistent, both in terms of the cast members who could be wrangled to appear, the quality of the sets, and the material they were actually given.

Ultimately there were way too many of these interludes peppered throughout the show, when a smaller number of higher-effort skits would've probably served the idea better.

But with Emmy viewership hitting an all-time low in 2022, one has to question the utility of doing this at all. Is constantly peering over your shoulder really the best way to hook in new, younger viewers?
