While some might argue that it's just a little too pandering in regard to all those Steven Spielberg nods, Stranger Things is nevertheless one of Netflix's best offerings of the past twelve months.

The definition of the "water cooler TV show", this sci-fi mystery thriller series slowly bleeds out a compelling mystery, propelled forward by a magnificent, totally unforgettable performance from Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven.

With gorgeous cinematography and a terrific 80s-inspired musical score, Stranger Things manages to be a technically sublime showcase and also a provocative, incredibly atmospheric romp through a well-trod genre.

Above all else, it leaves the viewer wanting more, and thankfully, season two will be with fans later this year.
