7. Luke Cage (Season 1)

What could be more socially relevant than a bulletproof black superhero patrolling the streets of Harlem in 2016?

Though the core of Luke Cage's crime narrative is incredibly familiar, the show nevertheless succeeds thanks to exceptional character work and strong performances across the board.

Particularly note-worthy are lead Mike Colter, the ever-brilliant Mahershala Ali as slick villain Cottonmouth, Simone Missick as sexy, sassy Detective Misty Knight and Alfre Woodard as councilwoman Mariah Dillard.

In terms of capturing the feel of Harlem and melding it with a distinct blaxploitation-inspired tone, Luke Cage is a fresh, welcome addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that adds a totally unique flavour. Hopefully season two will be a little more ambitious plot-wise, though.
