With Men Against Fire, Black Mirror turned to the military and the soldiers' perceptions of war. In it, a soldier called Stripe (Malachi Kirby) learns that the creatures he and his squad have been sent to kill aren't in fact villainous monsters, but people. From there, he uncovers a deep and complex government conspiracy.

Racing through a myriad of themes - tackling everything from wartime PTSD, government control of the military and prejudice - Men Against Fire makes for relevant and occasionally thought provoking TV, but isn't half as emotional as it really should have been.

All the ingredients are there, setting up an intense confrontation between Stripe and his superiors, but the whole thing feels forced and unengaging. It's violent, dark and rife with potential, but doesn't slow down nearly enough to dig into the topics it so effectively sets up.
