Every Black Mirror Episode Ranked Worst To Best
17. Smithereens
Every Black Mirror episode - even the poor ones we've already covered - have something to say, be it about society, racism, public opinion, parenthood or the increasing dangers of technological advances. But not Smithereens.
No, season five's best episode (which isn't saying much) has a message that can literally be condensed down to: Don't drink and drive, and stay off your phone!
Andrew Scott stars as Chris, a man who kidnaps a member (Damson Idris) of the Smithereens social media company and holds him hostage in hopes of...doing stuff.
Yes, the plot of Smithereens is fairly lacking when compared to Black Mirror's better episodes, and instead of focussing on some bizarre technological advancement, it instead works as an admittedly compelling character study, in which Scott gives a typically scene-stealing performance as a man driven to the edge of reason and willing to risk everything for his cause.
Smithereens is a bit too lazy on the narrative front to rank any higher, but as an actor's showcase and character study it's undeniably brilliant.
