Every Doctor Who Finale - Ranked Worst To Best
8. The Wedding Of River Song (Season 6)
While Moffat's mind-bending craziness often lends itself well to his finales, The Wedding of River Song is one of his less successful ventures. In a season full of confusing time travel, this episode happens to be the most confusing of all.
There are still plenty of positive moments in the episode. Simon Callow reprises his role as Charles Dickens providing Moffat's first link to Russel T Davies. They also pay respect to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart whose actor Nicholas Courtney had died months earlier. The best moment of the episode was the satisfying resolution of The Doctor's arc with River Song which the title of episode not-so-subtly hints at.
Outside of this, the episode leans far too heavily into the idea that elements of history are all coming together. While it is quite fun initially watching different eras of history collide, it soon gets too convoluted to keep up and by the time the episode ends most viewers would likely have had no idea what happened.
The episode can certainly be commended for attempting to do something bold and new but unfortunately, it didn't pay off.
