Every Doctor Who Finale - Ranked Worst To Best

7. Last Of The Time Lords (Season 3)

Russel T. Davies worst season finale can at least be appreciated for attempting something bold. Carrying on from the incredible two episodes prior, the finale concludes the saga of The Doctor and The Master by focusing mainly on Martha Jones' journey across the world.

The biggest complaints that were thrown at the ending was the apparent Deus Ex Machina of Martha's plan: to have every human on the planet say The Doctor's name at once. Albeit, it did feel a bit half-baked but was still foreshadowed in The Shakespeare Code where the power of words was the focal point.

On the positive side, John Simm's Master was extraordinary in his first run, going for a cocky yet insane villain reminiscent of The Joker. The unique approach to the episode allowed Martha to shine and prove that she was more than just the "rebound" she claimed she was before. As well as this, some long-standing mysteries were solved, the biggest of which being the hint that Captain Jack was the Face of Boe all along.

The episode also contained one of Tennant's most heart-wrenching moments as he watched The Master Die in his arms. There is a rollercoaster of emotions as The Doctor watches his greatest enemy and perhaps best friend leave him as the last of the time lords. His final words, "I win", are heartbreaking and Tennant plays it to perfection.
