Every Doctor Who Series Opener - Ranked Worst To Best
11. New Earth
David Tennant barely featured in his first story, The Christmas Invasion, so audiences were hopeful that the Series 2 opener, New Earth, would see the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler saving the universe together. It didn't.
Instead, the two take it in turns getting possessed by Lady Cassandra from The End Of The World, because for reasons unknown, every sci-fi/fantasy show has to have a body-swapping episode. The humour that stems from this scenario has not held up since 2006, nor have the special effects.
Now admittedly Tennant and Billie Piper are clearly having a lot of fun playing Cassandra and there is a half decent story about cat nuns using zombies to cure diseases. But overall it's definitely one of the weaker episodes of the revival and a poor way to open a series.
This was also the first revival episode to be set on a planet that isn't Earth, so it's very underwhelming to spend all of it in a boring hospital. Such great potential squandered.
