One of the most distinct shows on HBO’s current comedy roster, Los Espookys was co-created by Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen. If you’re familiar with his work in front of and behind the camera, you’ll know he’s a fan of wonderfully observed genre spoofs, and all round kookiness.
Los Espookys follows a group of friends who, under the eponymous banner, attempt to break into the horror filmmaking market. The remaining cast are made up of Armisen’s co-creators, a collection of mostly unknown performers from across North and Latin America. The show is primarily in Spanish, set in a dream-like mystery land that allows the show to genre hop from fantasy to horror to comedy.
It’s a gentle and warm watch; it’s not always laugh out loud funny, but the surrealism and invention on show here is beyond what most modern comedies would dare to dream up.
