Every HBO Series Of 2016 - Ranked Worst To Best
10. Vinyl
Vinyl is a show that emerged like a peacock, strutting around showing off its expensive period sets and a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese. The show also boasted Terrence “Boardwalk Empire” as showrunner, and Mick “Mick Jagger” Jagger as co-creator, so the pedigree for greatness was there.
It just never really clicked, and struggled to find a point to all the scenes of people snorting coke and listening to classic music. It made for a nice looking music video, but it didn’t make for compelling drama. The actors did their best, but it was clear midway through the season it was already struggling, and the audience quickly gave up.
It ended on such a whimper that the planned second season was quickly cancelled, which is a pity. With some course correction and a more focused story it could have been damn good. Maybe just buy the soundtrack instead.
