Every Inside No. 9 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

28. Wuthering Heists

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A tale of a heist gone wrong told in the style of a Commedia Dell'arte (a genre of comedy theatre that originated in Italy).

Location: An abandoned sound stage.

With the lowest-ranked season six episode, How Do You Plead?, that episode had a decent first two thirds and then a great final act. Interestingly, the first episode from that season is the opposite: the first two thirds of it are brilliant, but it loses control of itself in the final act.

At first, Wuthering Heists is an absolute joy. All of the brilliantly written jokes, fourth-wall breaks and plot twists pack a hysterical wallop and the wonderfully quirky script makes this a dizzyingly creative exercise in meta-comedy that'll have everyone grinning from ear to ear.

Unfortunately, this doesn't pay off in a very satisfying way in the final part of the episode. One gets the sense that Shearsmith and Pemberton just didn't quite know how to end this one and the story does just go off the rails a bit as it frantically ties up all of the episode's dangling plot threads.

Still, in spite of the disappointing conclusion, it's a hell of a lot of fun all the same.
