Every Inside No. 9 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
29. Last Night Of The Proms
Plot: While watching BBC Proms, members of a family descend into bitter arguing over Brexit and nationalism, while things are further complicated by the arrival of a mysterious visitor.
Location: A Somerset country house.
This is a weird one. It's already gone down as the least-popular episode of season six and, with its ambiguous ending and a couple of rather retrograde plot elements, this reaction isn't really surprising.
Still, while this episode is perhaps a bit of a mess, it's a glorious one at that. It's a savage, illuminating and most importantly, un-patronizing look at the divisions in post-Brexit Britain which is beautifully edited to the music of the Proms, and as you'd expect from this show the dialogue and performances (especially from Sarah Parish) are right on-point.
As for the third act, it's messy and confusing but it is undeniably shocking and it will provoke plenty of thought.
So, all in all, this isn't a great episode but it is still an admirably ambitious and overall impressive political satire that is likely to grow on people with repeat viewings.
