26. Misdirection

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A student (Fionn Whitehead) interviews a mysterious magician (Shearsmith) who has a dark secret in his past.

Location: A Storage unit.

The fourth episode of season five is a good one, though it's not one of the very best episodes of the show's run.

The trouble with Misdirection is that it represents the magic tricks at the centre of its story a bit too much - it's all about the surprises and twists, but there isn't necessarily a huge amount going on beneath the surface. As well as this, the ending doesn't elaborate on the fate of Jill Halfpenny's character enough.

Still, Misdirection is a very enjoyable episode. The many twists, turns and narrative tricks are very clever, the ending is very well set-up throughout the episode and rising star Fionn Whitehead adds another impressive performance to his growing filmography.
