25. The Bill

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A group of friends get into an appalling argument over who gets to pay the bill at a restaurant.

Location: A restaurant.

A group of men arguing over who pays the bill doesn't sound like much, does it? Well... think again.

The Bill gets a huge amount out of this seemingly mundane premise and is absolutely loaded with cracking comedic drama. The characters' motives aren't always clear, the final twist is disappointing and the very last scene is too confusing, but it still works very well for the most part.

It's a deft mixture of character-driven comedy and stinging social commentary, and it's raised up further by a typically strong cast (including Jason Watkins and Philip Glenister, both of whom are absolutely excellent) and fine direction from Guillem Morales.

Overall, a flawed but excellent episode.
