18. The Trial Of Elizabeth Gadge - Elizabeth Is A Witch After All

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: In the 17th century, a pair of witch-hunters (Pemberton and Shearsmith) put a woman accused of being a witch (Ruth Sheen) on trial.

This is a weak episode and one of the worst of the show's run, but the twist ending more or less saves it.

On the night of Elizabeth's execution, it turns out that Mr Clarke has swapped her out for Mr Warren and sends him off to be burned at the stake in her place, having realized that Warren has become corrupt and evil.

At first, it seems like this will be the big twist ending and it would've been a very satisfying conclusion indeed but in fact, The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge had a far bigger trick up its sleeve.

Elizabeth reveals to Clarke that she is a witch after all. All of the beyond-ridiculous things said during the witch trial were actually correct. She kills Clarke, turns into a raven and flies off.

While it could feel like negating the episode's story for some, in all honesty this is such a darkly hilarious and unpredictable ending that it's hard not to be won over by it.
