17. Seance Time - The Little Boy's Ghost Comes For Terry

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: Tragedy unfolds on the set of a corrupt hidden-camera prank show that's designed to frighten unsuspecting members of the public.

This particular ending - in which the ghost of a little boy who killed himself after being humiliated on a prank show goes after its thoroughly unpleasant host, Terry (Shearsmith) - isn't exactly unpredictable, but it still works very well.

In Seance Time, an actor named Clive (Dan Starkey) dies during the filming of the prank show and Terry tries to cover it up. But then, he sees Clive alive and well on the screens and goes in to check on him... but when he touches Clive, his corpse falls down - he was possessed. Then, the ghost of the little boy appears.

It's a very scary ending, as well as a thought-provoking and satisfying display of a deeply unpleasant individual getting their comeuppance. The episode ends with Terry apparently possessed by the little boy.

This is not only a chilling conclusion, but it's also even more potent in the wake of the many controversies surrounding British reality TV and the suicides of various guests and contestants on shows like The Jeremy Kyle Show and Love Island.

Predictable as it was, it's a fantastic ending.
