S.H.I.E.L.D. had a lot to prove in its second go. Despite a worthy turnaround in the later parts of Season 1, the public had already dismissed it as a dud show and it barely received a renewal.

So, when this season finally launched, it came out swinging; introducing strong new cast members and deliciously delving into Skye’s absorbing backstory. Also, it brought forth the super-powered inhuman element - an ingredient essential for swaying proceedings into an eventful comic book-infused tone.

Add to that fantastic support from Joss Whedon stock-players Reed Diamond and Dichen Lachman, yet it was Kyle Maclachlan who stole the show as Skye/Daisy’s estranged father with some serious Dr Jekyll and Hyde issues.

Also, it remains the only MCU season to get the balance of cinematic elements with small screen shenanigans, with several great uses of major characters - Sif, Agent Carter, Agent Smoulders - that energised proceedings in exciting ways.

Regardless, it also proved AoS didn't need to lean on the MCU for it to throw it a bone, with the show successfully building its own mythology and loveable characters. Oh, and let's not forget that incredible game-changer of an ending.
