5. The Punisher: Season 1

The Punisher Jon Bernthal

Daredevil Season 2 featured Jon Berenthal’s Frank Castle evolving into the comic character we know and love, concluding with him walking off into the shadows for his own spin-off.

That spin-off then proceeds to yank away everything that had been established in its opening moments. It was a weird left-field move that along with the slow-burn approach, initially soured many on the show until the finale returned to a more familiar territory.

Luckily, the part’s in-between make for an impressively grounded and gritty thriller by way of a character drama. It's all anchored by tour-du-force from Bernthal; his Castle is an involving spin on the old vigilante tale, refreshingly played by him with an open-wound fragility instead of the atypical strong-silent type.

The action is fairly sparse but when it hits, it hits hard with brutal Rated-R bloodshed, fistfights and shootouts that will excite and disturb even - this is miles apart from the MCU’s family-friendly onscreen material.

It’s a muscular show with plenty drama, suspense and solid performances around - still, it's a shame it didn’t embrace the source material in a stronger manner. With that said, even if it stumbles as an adaptation at points, based on its own merits, it is still ridiculously compelling stuff.
