17. Runaways: Season 1

Punisher Ghost Rider2
National Geographic

Runaways pitch-line of ’The Breakfast Club meets X-Men’ brings the enticing prospect of grounded teen drama coupled with superhero action - sounds tailor-made for TV, no?

The young cast are spot-on recreations of their comic counterparts and generally likeable enough, they also display a decent chemistry amongst each other. One wonders then why the showrunners work so hard to keep everyone apart and distracted with average and sulky character arcs. Only by the end of the season has anything significant gone down, with that a generous suggestion even.

Mildly more interesting is the B-plot following the 'evil' parents, played by a who's who of great supporting actors from late 90s TV (e.g. Buffy’s James Marsters, Alias’ Kevin Weisman, etc). Their plots go nowhere for the most as well, but at least Julian McMahon - here, getting a chance to redeem himself in a Marvel property - appears to be having a blast as the charismatic big bad.

In the end, it's a show that's not terrible but not really that good either - it just sort of is. Which is a shame since the source material sparked with fantastic work from TV champs Brian K. Vaugh and Joss Whedon - you'd think an adaptation would be a no-brainer slamdunk?
