Every Modern Doctor Who Season Ranked From Best To Worst
3. Season 4
It seems a tad harsh to have this wonderful season so far down the list, in what many consider to be the best of all. Looking back though it is evident the fourth series suffered from a similar problem as its predecessor, with quite a sluggish start to proceedings. Fires of Pompeii was a ripper and the concluding Sontaran episode was strong, but the majority of the first half of the season produced solid entertainment without reaching any great heights.
Thankfully the series really kicks into gear with Moffat's double episode Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, with Catherine Tate really finding her groove as Donna Noble.
The series peak though comes in the simply perfect episodes written by showrunner Russell T Davies. Midnight sees Tennant and a brilliant ensemble cast deliver a truly horrifying adventure in space, while Tate's pair up with the returning Billie Piper brings astonishing results in the post apocalyptic Turn Left.
The final double episode is fan service at its peak, with all the old crew returning to take down the Daleks. The climax is far from perfect and contained far too much exposition, but it was impossible not to smile when the whole gang got back together.
The fourth series probably has the best case to say that it contained no poor episodes. Even the series' weaker episodes, Planet of the Ood and Miss Marple adventure The Unicorn and the Wasp, still provided some genuine laughs and nice plot twists and were very watchable.
