Every Modern Doctor Who Season Ranked From Best To Worst
9. Season 6
After a ho hum Series 5 and concerns of dropping ratings, the decision was made by the BBC to split the series in two. The decision proved to be a blessing and a blight on the series, with the first half of the season proving extremely exciting, but giving the latter part of the series nowhere to go.
The double episode to kick off proceedings is outstanding, the return of River Song alongside Rory and Amy working effortlessly alongside Smith's more measured Doctor. There are some great twists and turns and a fun but unbiased depiction of Richard Nixon that adds much gravitas to proceedings.
The momentum from this great start keeps flowing through to the mid season cliffhanger, but the big reveal of River Song's origins comes far too early. We are then left to sit through episodes that seem largely irrelevant in the context of what we have learnt, with Rory and Amy bizarrely unfazed about losing their daughter as the series continues.
The lack of a good lead in episode to the finale means a lot of loose ends are tied up far too quickly. The BBC must take the blame here, their demands for a mid season cliffhanger throwing Moffat's initial plans out of whack.
Quality acting keeps the series afloat, Smith looking more comfortable in the central role and Alex Kingston excellent again as River. The highlight of the acting though is the Arthur Darvill/Karen Gillan combo, who are sublime throughout as the newly married couple.
