Every Modern Doctor Who Season Ranked From Best To Worst
8. Season 8
The first and best of the Peter Capaldi era, even if it wasn't the actors best series in the central role. Moffat delivers a quality series arc that doesn't suffer from his usual issues of being too complex and convoluted, although he does make a significant continuity error late in proceedings.
The series is anchored by Jenna-Louise Coleman's best season as companion Clara, keeping the Doctor honest throughout and proving the show's moral compass. Capaldi often plays the Doctor far too grumpy, so Coleman's ability to evoke genuine pathos in these moments is all the more important. The love story between Clara and Danny Pink is a strong point, even if the resolution makes no sense.
While the Doctor's 'am I a good person' arc gets a little tiring after a while, the Missy storyline is a cracker, especially the shock reveal of just who she is. The return of the Cybermen is overall handled well, with the idea of emotions being the villain's one weakness delivered in strong fashion again.
The series did err in becoming too dark at times, the Doctor leaving Clara to die on two occasions something totally out of character for our beloved Timelord. The other issue with the series is the death of Danny Pink, which creates significant plot holes from earlier episodes. Considering these issues arose from episodes that Moffat personally wrote makes these oversights inexcusable.
