Every Season Of How I Met Your Mother Ranked Worst To Best

4. Season 7

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Season 7 perfectly blends the ridiculousness of the humour with the more human side of the characters. For example, the third episode, Ducky Tie, follows two plot lines, one where Ted's ex-girlfriend Victoria will not get back together with him because of his friendship with Robin, and one where Barney must successfully pull off Hibachi cooking or he has to wear Marshall's stupid ducky tie for a year. Somehow, the combination works perfectly.

Season 7 slowly reveals more and more about the wedding at which Ted and the Mother meet, starting off with the cliffhanger ending from last season that it's Barney's wedding. As such, Barney's love life takes center stage, as he has the potential to end up with Nora, Robin, or Quinn. Showing "boyfriend Barney" illustrates how far the former player has come, and the identity of his wife becomes just as intriguing a mystery as who Ted's wife will be.

However, the standout of the season is Robin. Cobie Smulders gives her best performance yet, breaking everyone's heart in the episode Symphony of Illumination while acting as funny as ever with the recurring "DAMN IT PATRICE!" gag. Smulders' performance, made up of equal parts humanity and hilarity, shows why the season works, and deserves much more credit from fans than it gets.
