Every Season Of How I Met Your Mother Ranked Worst To Best
2. Season 4
Season 4 of How I Met Your Mother is the only season to be nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, and it absolutely deserves its recognition. The season is filled to the brim with classic episodes, including The Best Burger in New York, The Fight, Three Days of Snow, and The Possimpible. Each of those contains several laugh out loud moments, but the standout has to be Barney's video resume, where he does absolutely nothing but sing a song about how awesome he is.
While Season 3 follows a Ted-like Barney, Season 4 follows a Barney-like Ted, trying to ask Robin out but never gaining the courage to do so. We get to see a more human side of the character, and his friendship with Lily, who's coaching him through the process, is as endearing as it sounds.
Season 4 is the first to feature some emotional episodes, setting the stage for seasons 6 and 7's best moments. Towards the beginning of the season, Ted's fiance Stella leaves him at the altar, breaking his heart and adding a layer of humanity. In the season finale, The Leap, which may well be the single best episode of How I Met Your Mother, Ted looks back at his rough year, which motivates him to take the literal and metaphorical leap, hopping over to the next building with his friends and taking a job as a teacher.
Season 4 was in many ways an experimental year for the show, relying more on emotional moments than any of the previous seasons. The experiment paid off, changing How I Met Your Mother for the better and creating one of its best seasons in the process.
