Homer Simpson is, quite possibly, the greatest cartoon character ever. He faces some stiff competition, not least from some others on this list, but with The Simpsons having such a monumentally long run with Homer at the centre, he has to be top.

Yes, the show’s not as good as it used to be. But to still be around in any form after 661 episodes is frankly staggering for a cartoon. For reference, Family Guy is at 329. Bob’s Burgers? ‘Just’ 171, which is still a pretty amazing showing.

Never say never, but it’s highly unlikely either will get to The Simpsons’ record, especially with Homer and the rest renewed through two more seasons, taking them comfortably over 700.

Early on, the show switched from having Bart at the centre to having Homer, and they haven’t really looked back. This change ushered in the Golden Era, pumping out some of the best animated episodes the world has ever produced.

Homer The Smithers, You Only Move Twice, Last Exit To Springfield, Homer’s Phobia, Homer’s Enemy... the list goes on and on (and on and on) of simply outstandingly high quality episodes with Homer at the centre. Nobody else could really come first.
