17. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

Star Trek Into Darkness isn't a bad movie, but it's uninspired. Although there are a few major differences, the main plot of Into Darkness is basically a reboot of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

Of course it's cool to see how this alternate Kirk would handle the infamous Khan, but in the alternate reality established in Star Trek (2009), Kirk doesn't have the same history with Khan as his prime universe counterpart. The Original Series episode Space Seed never happened in this reality, making the conflict between Kirk and Khan less compelling. Instead Khan was captured by Admiral Marcus, a member of the secret organisation, Section 31, before escaping and starting his vendetta against Starfleet.

The inclusion of Section 31 and the incredibly cool warship, the USS Vengeance, are cool to see, but the movie doesn't do much else to stand apart from the much superior movie, The Wrath Of Khan. It would have been cool for this universe to go in a different direction, such as Khan working with Starfleet to bring down Section 31.
