11. The Funeral In The Sting

Star Trek Futurama
Fox

The Sting follows Leela after Fry dies trying to save her from the sting of a giant space bee. Leela feels wracked with guilt and keeps hearing Fry's voice. While deciding to eat enough space honey to go to sleep forever to be with Fry, she hears his voice again and it shows that it is actually Leela in a coma, as the stinger went straight through Fry and pierced Leela with all the venom. She awakens to his voice.

In the episode, they hold a funeral for Fry after he has died. The funeral is similar to both Spock's funeral in The Wrath of Khan and Janeway's funeral in the Voyager episode Coda with Fry's coffin being shot out into space. This goes further with the Voyager reference, as it has the same pod shot in space.

Spock's funeral is a touching end to Wrath of Khan and the use of the coffin being shot slowly into space not to be seen again is a powerful image that always brings back the memories of the ending of that movie. Of course, Spock being shot into space allowed him to be revived as he landed on Project Genesis. Despite this not being the case for Fry, the image of the scoffing disappearing is a clear reference to the movie.
