Every Star Trek Reference In Futurama
10. Commander Riker's Island In Three Hundred Big Boys
Three Hundred Big Boys examines hoe the crew each act when everyone is given a $300 tax rebate after Zapp Brannigan manages to capture a series of very expensive silk artworks. Leela swims with a whale, Fry drinks 100 cups of coffee, Bender buys burglar tools to steal a $10,000 cigar. The whole situation goes haywire when Bender accidentally sets fire tot he artworks with his cigar.
The reference comes in Kif's story. Kif decides to spend his rebate buying Amy a watch. He accidentally drops the watch and it is swallowed by the whale that Leela is swimming. He goes after it but is briefly arrested under suspicion of stealing Ambergris.
While he is arrested he is sent to Commander Riker's island, a play on the real prison in the east river in New York, Riker's Island. The name has been changed in classic Futurama fashion to honour commander Riker, Jean-Luc Picard's second in command in The Next Generation. Riker is an integral part of the series and subsequent movies and the actor, Jonathan Frakes, has solidified his place in Star Trek, having directed a number of episodes of Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Discovery, and Picard. A reference to his character was inevitable.
