Star Trek (retroactively titled Star Trek: The Original Series) was the show that started it all back in 1966. And, rest assured, it didn't spawn such a massive franchise without good reason.

There's no two ways about it, the original Star Trek TV series was absolutely fantastic. During a time of political turmoil and constant conflict, Star Trek offered a glimpse at a Utopian future where humanity has banded together, leaving their petty differences in the past in order to explore the deep regions of space and further themselves as a species.

The show had a shoestring budget, but made up for that with the deep philosophical and social commentary it had to offer, the interesting characters that have endured to this very day, and the wonderful stories it had to tell that would make up some of the best episodes in television history.

Yes, the unfortunate reality is that the show made so long ago with so little money hasn't exactly aged terribly well. However, that's perfectly okay. Even if it would ultimately be surpassed by some of its successors, it was the spark that ignited the flame. Despite not objectively being the best Star Trek show, it will always be remembered as the series that laid the groundwork for what was to be a god-like sensation.
