2. Movin' Out (Brian's Song)

Family Guy used to have a lot more heart. Movin' Out is a perfect example of this, where you rooted for Brian and were crushed along with him when it didn't work out. It marked the end of his most important relationship to date, with the gorgeous but ditzy Jillian, which was all the more poignant since Brian sabotaged his own happiness by taking her for granted. The episode focused on this relationship and his attempts to live with her to prove that he loves her. This continues Brian's arc of being a hopeless romantic and doesn't shy away from how sad the situation is. It is not all doom and gloom as he is able to pick himself up and move on with his life but it is this drama that used to make Family Guy more compelling than its irreverent humour ever could. Jillian goes on to be married in a later episode but Brian never really gets this chance at happiness, cut down in his prime before he is able to find love. This episode makes you feel as well as laugh, it's a tightly written narrative that subverts expectations and ventures into sad territory. Its comedy is intertwined with cutting pathos and Movin' Out (Brian's Song) really delivers in that respect.
