1. Road To Rhode Island

The one that started it all, the episode that found the spark between Brian and Stewie and paved the way for all of the other 'Road to...' scenarios; Road to Rhode Island is Family Guy at its soaring best: the humour is spot on, there's a catchy duet and we learn more about Brian's history. This was a road trip of necessity, the two of them trying to get home all while confronting the demons of their past. The episode begins with the revelation that Brian was born on a puppy farm and never got to know his mother, which has obviously affected him and explains a lot of his neurosis throughout Family Guy's run. Brian decides to get closure and meet his mother only to find out that she had been stuffed and turned into a table. Despite this not being ideal in terms of resolution, he is able to give her a proper burial before they continue their journey home. As for the importance of this episode, it's the foundation of Brian and Stewie's close relationship, and from here on, they develop a mutual respect and their back and forth became the best thing about Family Guy.
