Fargo: 4 Lingering Questions From The Finale

2. Where Is Mr. Wrench?

FXFXMr. Wrench is the last of our major characters to completely disappear without a trace. The last time we saw him was in "The Heap," just before the one-year time jump. Wrench was hospitalized following the shootout in Duluth, and left handcuffed to his bed with a guard waiting by the door. That guard wasn't much for Lorne Malvo, who killed him in the bathroom and then went into Mr. Wrench's room to have a little chat. He confesses to killing Wrench's partner, Mr. Numbers, and seems impressed by how close the two came to killing him. He tells Wrench a story about a bear he once saw in Alaska, who caught his foot stuck in a bear trap but ate his foot off to get free. The bear died an hour later, but Malvo explains that it was "on his own terms, you know?" He then has a Kill Bill moment, and takes the key to the handcuffs out of his pocket and gives them to Wrench. He tells him that if he ever "feels sour about the whole thing," he can come and find him. Apparently, he never does feel sour, because we never see him again. Honestly this isn't a big deal, as his sudden appearance in the finale would likely have felt like deus ex machina. As the show went into its final few episodes it needed to weed out a few characters in order to shift the focus back to the core four: Lester, Lorne, Gus, and Molly. Throwing Wrench into that equation may have muddied the waters a bit. However, that doesn't mean we're not curious about what happened to him. Did he let himself free, or accept his fate and go to prison? Was he ever planning on finding Lorne and taking his revenge but was beaten to the punch by Gus? I guess we'll never know.
