From the beginning, we are revealed that our sweet-toothed police officer is feeling severe guilt following the events which occurred during his post as a ranger for Virginia's Pioneers. Distancing himself from June and even contemplating suicide, John eventually bumps into Morgan and Dakota and begins to assist them with the removal of several walkers.

The episode gave John hope for a new beginning. However, as Morgan turns to fix something off-screen, Dorie discovers the knife Dakota possesses was the murder weapon of Cameron. In a hastened attempt to diffuse the situation, Dakota suddenly opens fire on his chest and throws him off the bridge.

Not only was this initial wound a shock, but he seemingly survived after drifting down the river. After experiencing worse situations, the audience was left believing that this warrior was going to survive until June discovered a now zombified John crawling along the beach.
